today i met a man who quite literally travels around handing out bracelets the color of the unity flag to african american youth. he gives you a little history lesson about the creation of it, and what the colors represent. he told me “if you see a black boy, tell him about where he came from. tell him about the flag and the struggles his people went through so that we would have something to call his own, and i bet you, his pants won’t sag as low and neither will his head.”
i introduced myself, and when he found out that my last name was shabazz he was visibly elated, and he made a special one just for me with my name on it!! he told me that there is a lot of power in the legacy of my last name, and that i seemed to be carrying on that legacy extremely well. so much happened today. he even asked to take a picture of me to keep for future reference! I got a bracelet and an anklet (not pictured) and i wear it with pride.
